Mise-En-Scene Considerations
Mise-En-Scene Considerations
☆Lighting is usually bright to make the video more eye-catching
☆Many expensive props are used such as cars, phones, speakers, headphones and other electronics. These are used to advertise product to allow the video to generate money.
☆The music genre is usually conveyed through the setting and dressing of the video.
☆Artists are usually clothed is mainstream or fashionable outfits.
☆A lot of makeup and fashion accessories are worn that follow current fashion trends
☆The setting is important in pop music videos because if the setting is dull then the target audience won’t be attracted to watch the video. Artist often used setting were the target audience want to go or want to have e.g. mansions and exotic destinations.
To allow you to see the aesthetics and Mise-En-Scene of my video I have created a mood board:
As you can see I have large variety of image each contributing to what I want the Mise-En-Scene of my video to be.
Costume and Make-Up:
Within the left hand corner of the mood board I have a variety of different images that will inspire the costume of each of my characters. As you can see I want the outfits to be colourful yet simple, the simplicity of my outfits is to imply to the audience that this is an everyday story, creating a more relatable video as many can wear these outfits in day to day life, suggesting that my character is like an everyday teenager facing immense problems. The colour is to make the outfits fit the scenery, this also juxtaposes the storyline as the clothes are bright and colourful, yet the storyline deals with depressing problems.
Not only that the clothes also are summery, again matching in with the location, these clothes are also being worn by other teenagers in the area, this asked my characters blend in with the scenery and it again creates a more relatable story as it suggest my characters live within the area.
On the bottom left of the mood board I have images of natural makeup and hair looks, this is what I aspire for my characters to look like, again the simplicity of the hair and makeup helps me to create a relatable story, as if the video is happening in real life, making people become aware of the situation and how people in the world face this everyday.
I know that the costume and makeup doesn't fit with the conventions of a pop music video, yet most music videos don't deal with situations like this, so I wanted to make the video as relatable as possible, wearing simple clothes and having a simple make-up look builds the illusion that my characters are teenagers like all the viewers watching the video. However the bright clothing does fit with the convention of pop music video being bright and eye-catching.
The bright colours and natural look also fits in with the song, as it is up beat and the outfits and make up are similar to what Sigrid uses within her videos, so I have seen that the costume and make-up effectively matchup with the song.
Location:
Moving onto the scenery, images are shown on the top right hand side of the moodboard, as you can see I will be filming in exotic location such as beaches. This fits I with the pop mucis connotation as they are usually based in locations that artist oftenbelive their target audience want to go. By filming in an exotic place like Anna Maria Island, it may entice the viewers to watch and view the video as they want to see the different and unique location.
Lighting:
There are also images of lighting that I want to use, I want to keep the lighting natural and simple as possible, to make the video more realising and therefore relatable. However I want to film at night in areas that have bright lighting e.g. neon lights, this would be a great way to play around with the lighting in the area, creating !!!!! lighting. This would be realty fun to play around with, as well as create a hidden meaning, suggesting that there is always light within the darkness.
As I am filming in a sunny and bright location, the natural light fits in with the connotations of the music video, as the area is bright and colourful, creating a bright and colourful asthetics to my video.
Props:
I have also included images of props that I want to use, such as phone, ice cream and headphones, everyday items that a teenager uses, creating a more realistic storyline.
To conclude, i have considered all elements involved with the Mise-En-Scene of the video, this research and clear mood board allowed me to collect my thoughts together and allows me to make it easier to film the different shots as I now know what I want my video to look like, helping create a relatable and realist story within my video.
To ensure that my filming and production of my music video runs smoothly, I completed some extra research about the Mise-En -Scene of my video. I have done this research to ensure that my video fits all the common conventions of a pop music video, as well as to ensure that I have thought out every detail of my music video, so that the production runs smoothly, as I will need to pack all the costumes, make-up etc. To ensure that I have all the resources while I am in America.
Mise-En-Scene refers to the arrangment of the scenery within a production, this includes the lighting, props, costume, make-up, aesthetics and colour of the video and the location.
I found out a lot about the Mise-En-Scene when researching the pop music genre and the videos, for that research I found out these
elements usually depend on the genre of the music.

I love the aesthetic of your video so much! It looks like the video will look really good! Good also that you have related your own mise-en-scene to the traditional conventions of pop music. Do you think there will be any elements in your own music video that won't strictly follow these traditional conventions in terms of m.e.s?
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! Yes there are a few conventions within my music video that don't typically associate itself to conventions within a Pop music video. For example, many Pop music videos tend to have girls with large amounts of make-up on and expensive clothing, yet I will be having a natural make-up look and very casual clothing, to make the video seem more realistic to viewers watching.
